Maintenance Manager - Plating Operations / Automotive Systems

Privately-held, financially secure, highly innovative manufacturer of finish and trim systems for the automotive industry has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Maintenance Manager in the plating operation at at their western Michigan HQ location. This is a brand new position that will support business in the new plating facility, and offers a GREAT future career path. You will ensure that plant equipment, facility, and machinery are running in the most efficient manner and properly maintained.
Specific activities will include:
  • Manage and direct maintenance personnel, and coordinate the activities of contract workers and suppliers.
  • Oversee the training and development plans for all maintenance personnel.
  • Monitor plant performance, troubleshoot and resolve production issues.
  • Order maintenance parts and maintain appropriate supplies for keeping plant operational.
  • Monitor preventative maintenance activities.
  • Evaluate the purchase of capital equipment and provide input to Capital Plan.
  • Participate in required meetings including PACE, Safety and Environmental.
  • Monitor and insure facility and equipment comply with all federal, state, and local codes.
  • Monitor and manage energy savings activities.
  • Manage plant repairs & supplies budget and maintenance labor.
  • Develop and manage plant capital budget items.

To be successful and happy in this role, a combination of education, experience and personal characteristics is required:

  • Associate’s degree or higher in related field – THIS IS A MUST-HAVE
  • Meaningful experience in a plating operation – THIS IS A MUST-HAVE TO BE CONSIDERED
  • 7+ total years work experience including 5+ years in maintenance function with maintenance management experience
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with good diagnostic skills
  • Proven problem solving skills, root cause analysis, prioritization etc.
  • Knowledgeable in electrical, mechanical, hydraulics, and PLC controls
  • Highly effective communicator (up and down)
  • Strong motivational skills to gain team buy-in to new ideas and methods

TECHNOLOGIST - COATINGS
Novelis will be opening a new global Research and Development facility in Kennesaw, GA during the first quarter of 2012.  We will be developing innovative ways of producing aluminum products for our customers, which include the auto industry. There is an immediate opening for a Technologist with coatings experience.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties will involve specialist technical work aimed at solving technical operating problems, improving processes, and developing products or characterizing materials behavior.   Within a larger project team, this role will be given individual responsibility to design and carry out specific, key programs or work with a scope and complexity determined by knowledge and experience.   Successful candidates will have broad practical experience of experimental techniques and/or methods aligned to the application, processing and evaluation of polymer coatings on metal surfaces, preferably on aluminum.  They will have strong communication skills, both orally and written, and will be able to conduct and report on their work with minimal supervision.  A flexible response to evolving projects needs and the ability to thrive in a team environment will be key assets.  At times, technologists may be asked to act as a company-wide resource in their area of expertise. 

REQUIREMENTS

·         Five years of experience working in a laboratory setting

·         Technical college degree or Bachelor’s Degree required

·         Experience with coatings application and testing

·         Prior experience with aluminum is highly desired but not essential

Manufacturing Engineer

The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for developing, evaluating and improving manufacturing methods utilizing his/her knowledge of design, materials, parts, fabrication processes, tooling, assembly, quality control standards, and efficiency and production equipment capabilities.   The Manufacturing engineer will perform work related to planning, devising, or adapting methods to improve manufacturing production in the finishing factory. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of engineering assignments to improve manufacturing production by working closely with manufacturing, product engineering, production operators and maintenance.  Responsibilities include analyzing and planning work force utilization, space requirements, workflow and designing layout of equipment and workspace for maximum efficiency.
  • Lead and participate in continuous process improvement initiatives.  Consult with management, engineering, and other staff regarding production capabilities, production schedules, and other considerations to facilitate production processes.   
  • Support daily manufacturing operations (troubleshoot and resolve problems with equipment while in production).  Examine equipment, processes, operations, and assembly to determine time and quality revisions, and suggests improvements.
  • Knowledgeable of production flow and capable of logically developing and planning within this flow that correctly and efficiently builds products. Demonstrated abilities in developing and executing statistical process control for manufacturing is required.
  • Strong individual performer demonstrating a team oriented collaboration with other production members, company engineers, staff and supervisors to support projects, achieve customer satisfaction and accomplish goals in line with company vision. 
  • Strong reasoning ability involving defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts and drawing valid conclusions with the ability to write a business case for specified projects.  
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral to effectively communicate.   Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from Gunlocke members, managers, customers and suppliers.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, problem-solving, multi-tasking, attention to detail, organizational, time management, verbal/written communications, and project management skills a must.  Apply statistical methods to estimate future manufacturing requirements and potential.

Educational/Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related disciplines – preferably in mechanical or industrial engineering.  Minimum of 4 years experience in related field.  Experienced in lean manufacturing is preferred.  Exceptional computer skills required including word processing, spreadsheets, flowcharting software, manufacturing software (MRP), AutoCAD required - Mechanical Desktop, CNC programming a plus.  Demonstrated ability to read drawings.

Occasional domestic travel to suppliers and other operating companies may be required as needed.

Corporate Director - Coating and Finishing Processes

LOCATION:
          Fayetteville, Arkansas, with 30 – 50% travel to other operations, Mexico / United States.

EMPLOYER:
Publicly-traded manufacturer with operations and business ventures in the United States, Mexico, and India. The company is a leading producer of cast and flow form OEM aluminum wheels for the automotive sector. The company is strategically positioned to dynamically grow market share by investing in the right people and right technology.

RESPONSIBILITY SUMMARY:

  • The incumbent will be responsible for implementation of systemic improvements to drive the company’s competitive position through process standardization, research and implementation of new technology involving, pre-treatment, powder & liquid application of cosmetic sensitive product.

  • Working with vendors and plant personnel the incumbent will recommend capital equipment, develop processes that reduce cost and improve yield, and implement/insure standardization across multiple facilities.

  • This is a highly visible position requiring travel between operations to gather and analyze data, train plant personnel, document and implementation of best practices and monitoring continuous improvement.

  • The ideal candidate has aluminum pretreatment, powder application, electrostatic powder and liquid application experience on a cosmetic metal component. Requires experience with high volume continuous conveyor painting and convection, IR curing of thermo set materials and robot painting.  

BACKGROUND REQUIRED:      

  • BS degree in a manufacturing or engineering discipline or equivalent experience required.  Chemical Engineering BS/MS preferred.

  • Exceptional understanding of quality best-in-class practices utilized in the automotive sector.  

  • Track record of leading operational excellence in finishing technology through properly training and developing people in first time through, zero defect culture while focusing on employee safety, quality, continuous improvement, cost avoidance, and the development of a disciplined follow the process organization 

  • Background in pre-treatment of aluminum substrates in preparation for coating. 

  • Background in lean manufacturing. 

  • Background in electrostatic and liquid painting of OEM automotive highly cosmetic critical finish product. 

  • 10 years of progressive technical and managerial success within the automotive component manufacturing environment. 

  • Strong knowledge of organic and non-organic chemicals and a working knowledge of finishing technology on aluminum. 

  • Multi-plant, powder and liquid coating experience in a fast paced high volume production environment requiring high quality standards. 

  • Must be a subject expert in mechanical and technical issues regarding electrostatic and liquid finishing application equipment and technology. 

  • Additional experience in budgeting, production metrics, SPC, Failure Analysis, PPAP, FMEA, procedures.   

  • Must be a Microsoft office products power user Excel / Word / Powerpoint. 

  • The ability to read and speak Spanish is preferred.

Conducts feasibility studies, determines manpower and cost estimates and develops engineering criteria. Minimum Requirements
° Bachelor's degree in Engineering or 2 years college in scientific/technical field PLUS 6 + years experience as a top performer.
° 3-5 year professional engineering experience in a finish/paint/coating work setting.
° Experience with powder coat processes required. Experience with other coating processes such as Autophoretic, high solid and water born liquid applications preferred.
° Experience with different types of substrate processing such as steel, aluminum, plastic, castings, and wood required.
° Experience specifying and validating equipment criteria.
° Knowledge and experience with coatings formulations, understanding the functions of coatings components and their performance against desired criteria is required.
° Experience with pre-treatment systems required.
° Possess the energy and drive to complete work in a timely matter and meet deadlines.
° Proven skills in paint system design, layout, and operating parameters.
° Project management is required; PE preferred for some assignments.
° Knowledgeable with Lean thinking. Must be able to assess process concepts and to determine where continuous improvement opportunities exist.
° Must be able to communicate effectively with people at various levels including production, engineering, and management and to be able to work well with and develop a partnering
relationship with other team members.
° Able to work off shifts and/ or at multiple locations.
° Must be a skilled problem solver and be able to use data and apply engineering expertise to problem solving.
