Challenges for Metal Working and Cleaning for 2016
Speaker – Sean Booth, Technical Support Chemist, Chemtool Incorporated

2016 will be the most challenging year for metal working chemistry in the last 30 years. New TSCA (Toxic Substance Control Act) requirements will dramatically change metal working forever. Medium and long chain chlorinated paraffins (CP) will be eliminated by May of 2016. Alternates to medium and long chain CP bring mostly benefits to cleaning and paint pretreatment. Additional pressures from REACH will affect cleaning and restrict the variety of surfactants and emulsifiers used in both metal working fluids and metal cleaning products. All of this is on top of continued regulatory pressures on secondary alkanolamines and supply restrictions of calcium sulfonates. Finally, encapsulated alternatives to difficult to clean solid lubricants such as graphite or calcium carbonate with improved cleaning are becoming possible.
