End users are the driving force behind technological advances in the industry and deserve to be recognized for that contribution.

This year, The Electrocoat Association recognizes Larry Hibbitts, Senior Engineer of Production Engineering in Paint at Toyota Motors North America, for his presentation “Zirconium Conversion Coating Technology and Real-World OEM Experience and Benefits”.

Larry, alongside David George, Surface Treatment Technical Manager at Henkel Corporation, curated this presentation where they compared and contrasted zirconium conversion coating technology and zinc phosphate technology when used in metal pretreatment systems. During the presentation, Larry provided real-world data on Toyota’s experience and benefits of zirconium technology, highlighting operational and process savings as well as sustainability gains.

ECOAT24 Brewer Award Winners Announced https://www.ccaiweb.com/news/670432/ https://www.ccaiweb.com/news/670432/ Dr. George E.F. Brewer is generally credited with the original idea of electrodeposition of paint through his work and research during the late 1950s at Ford Motor Company. By loaning his name to this prestigious award given during the ECOAT Conference, recipients stand out among the best in the field of electrocoating.

The 2024 Brewer Award Winners were presented with their awards at ECOAT24 at the Omni ChampionsGate in Orlando, Florida on April 4th. Please join us in congratulating this year’s winners!

Karen McGlothlin, The Electrocoat Association – Market Promotion of Electrocoat Technology

Karen McGlothlin has done more to promote the benefits and technology of electrodeposition coatings in North American than anyone in the 21st century. As the long-time Executive Director of The Electrocoat Association, McGlothlin has worked to extend the knowledge of ecoat to all regions of North America, by maintaining through her leadership the participation of an evolving roster of directors, committee members, writers and presenters; by thoroughly understanding the geographic concentrations of the ecoat market in the U.S., and the logistics behind delivering the greatest knowledge-sharing benefits in the selection of Association events and settings; and by successfully stewarding the financial resources and stability of The Electrocoat Association. The ecoat market owes a debt of gratitude to McGlothlin, for her long-time championing and promotion of the technology.

Suresh Patel, BASF/Chemetall – Application of Electrocoat Technology

Suresh Patel has been influencing and educating users of substrate cleaning and pretreat products for ecoat lines for decades. Throughout his distinguished career with BASF/Chemetall, he has been perceived as a leader and subject matter expert by his peers and customers. Over that time, he has volunteered countless hours to promote and educate on the aesthetic, economic and environmental benefits of the technology of ecoat over clean and properly pretreated metal. With his hard work, teaching skills, and deep knowledge of chemistry and application techniques, Suresh has greatly advanced the awareness, and the level of quality of ecoat throughout the manufacturing and finishing industry.

Robin Peffer, PPG – Development of Electrocoat Technology

Robin Peffer has been working in and around electrocoat technology for her entire career of nearly 30 years with PPG. She began working on the Research formulation team where her efforts directly contributed to the ongoing success of one-coat, white, cationic acrylic products for the appliance industry, representing some of the highest throughput tanks anywhere in the global, industrial ecoat marketplace. She also invested considerable research effort into flexible, two-coat electrocoat technology as well as products tailored for bulk application onto unracked parts.

Under her guidance, PPG has grown the business to support 12 pilot- or commercial-scale Aerocron systems worldwide, with new interest in this market growing weekly. The most significant of these systems was installed at Air Tractor in 2017.

Peffer is an inventor or co-inventor on 40 published US patents (and counting), 32 of which involve Electrocoat technology. Peffer’s technical and market leadership has led ecoat from the Automotive and Industrial markets into the adjacent Aerospace market. Formerly, electrocoat had only tangentially penetrated Aerospace using individually approved parts (ecoat inclusive in the part approval) electrocoated by industrial applicators, with unrecognized products, in limited circumstances. Now, the technology continues to grow into its own within Aerospace OEM and even MRO organizations, and great things are expected for the near future.

AR Iron Celebrates 35 Years in Business Serving Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada https://www.ccaiweb.com/news/663540/ https://www.ccaiweb.com/news/663540/ AR Iron was originally established out of urgency for owners, Fred and Sylvia Sclafani, to care for their family. Having worked at Kaiser Steel in Fontana, California for ten years, Fred had extensive experience in the ornamental iron and mason industries. Taking a bet on himself, and for the betterment of his family, Fred decided to bring his skills and passion to Las Vegas and try his hand at running his own iron shop.

As most business start-ups experience, it started out rough. The hours were long, the space
was small, and the means were few, but together, Fred and Sylvia were going to make it work. Inevitably, 1989 would turn out to be a landmark year for them. AR Iron began as a small fabrication shop building gates, fences, security doors and entryways, first serving residential customers, and then moving into commercial projects.

Las Vegas was booming. Homes were going up everywhere, and it made sense to partner
with well-known home builders across the valley. This work would open doors to even
bigger commercial projects including multi-family apartments, schools, storage facilities,
casinos, and restaurants. After a few years, Fred’s dream for AR Iron had touched
numerous projects all over the valley. He had also spread his passion to his son, Tony
Sclafani, who would join the business in 1997.

The 2007 recession would force AR Iron to diversify, and a powder coat division was added
to accompany the iron. Powder coating would provide a quicker, environmentally friendly
way to deliver iron products in any number of colors, textures, and finishes. AR Iron added
two different lines – an automated conveyor, with a line-parts opening of 2’ x 8’ x 20’, 8-
automated and 2-manual Parker Ionic spray guns, 5-stage pre-treatment system, gel oven
and a dry off oven measuring 28’x26’x30’, and a Parker Ionic batch system measuring
12’x12’x35’. To accompany the quality of coating AR Iron wanted to achieve for batching, a
reverse osmosis rinse, degreaser and iron phosphate sealer station was added along with a
media blast booth for blasting capabilities.

Recently, in 2023, AR Iron received its AAMA 2604 and AAMA 2605 certifications becoming
one of the only companies in the western US to pass the rigorous testing set forth by the
American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) to offer compliant powder
coatings to architects, contractors and building owners.

Today, AR Iron is still operating under the same family-owned, God blessed, value-system
Fred Sclafani set forth to establish in 1989. Not only did his dream provide for his
immediate family, but through Fred’s efforts he was able to employ a valuable team of
employees, provide opportunities to help serve people in the community, and offer
numerous customers beautiful, custom, powder coated ornamental iron work. It is with
great appreciation to everyone who has played a part in AR Iron that we celebrate 35 years
of business, and it is with thankful, grateful hearts we also thank the two people who
started it all – Fred & Sylvia Sclafani.
